Hi there đź‘‹

Total Value Locked (TVL) is a metric used to measure the total amount of assets deposited in a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol or ecosystem.

When users deposit tokens into smart contracts—such as for staking, lending, liquidity provision, or restaking—the value of those assets (usually denominated in USD) contributes to the protocol’s TVL. This metric is often used as a proxy for adoption, capital commitment, and overall economic activity within a protocol.

While a higher TVL can signal strong user confidence and liquidity, it also has limitations and risks. TVL can fluctuate significantly due to token price volatility rather than actual changes in user behavior, and it does not directly reflect profitability, sustainability, or security. In some cases, incentives or leveraged strategies can artificially inflate TVL, making it important to interpret the metric with caution rather than as a standalone indicator of protocol health.
